Eat Zonzi with Organic Tea. Learn Tea Tasting with Young Farmers

As the Dragon Boat Festival is approaching, eating zongzi (rice dumplings) is the most appropriate way to celebrate this festival. A pot of healthy organic tea can cut the grease of zongzi. The tea fragrance matches perfectly with zongzi. New Taipei City Government raised the first National Organic Tea Selection event. People can drink the best organic tea without going to the tea gardens in various areas. People can eat meat zongzi, taste organic tea at home, and enjoy a healthy life through online order forms. The whole tea production is limited to 1500kg.

2020 is the first year of Taiwan Organic Tea. To expand the advertising effect, New Taipei City Government, Tea Research and Extension Station, Liu-Kung Agriculture Foundation, Tse-Xin Organic Agriculture Foundation, and New Taipei City Organic Agricultural Products Marketing Cooperative cooperated in holding the first Taiwan Organic Tea Selection this year, which is divided into two groups: strip-type and ball-type. New Taipei City Young farmers won strip-type Paochong and ball-type Oolong tea awards. Yeh-Bin Chou, a young farmer from Linkou District, won the Golden Frog award, Silver Frog Award, and Bronze Frog Award for strip-type oolong tea. Yeh-Bin Chou, born in 1978, grew up on a tea plantation and learned to grow tea with his father. During his schooling, he was also closely connected with agriculture. He studied at the Affiliated Tao-Yuan Agricultural & Industrial Senior High School of the National Taipei University of Technology. He graduated from the Graduate Institute of Agronomy of National Chung Hsing University. After graduation, he still worked in agriculture-related industries, doing landscape gardening and selling pesticides and fertilizers. He chose to work with and accompany his father and refused to give up the loss of tea-making technology; he decided to return to his hometown to work as a farmer in 2014.

Yeh-Bin Chou found that Taiwan’s agriculture depended too much on pesticides because he had sold pesticides in the past. He often told his father that their tea plantation should not use pesticides as much as possible. They started not using pesticides or chemical fertilizers as early as ten years ago. In the first year, the production of fresh tea leaves was reduced to half of the original due to diseases and pests and then gradually stabilized. By the fourth year, tea production had exceeded the initial output. Now the 25-hectare organic tea plantation produces about 500kg of ball-type oolong tea and black tea. Yeh-Bin Chou attended the first Taiwan Organic Tea Selection and won Gold Frog Award, Silver Frog Award, and Bronze Frog Award. Yeh-Bin Chou said that oolong tea could remove horrible taste and enhance tea flavor through light roasting; proper fermentation and roasting can make sweet tea flavor. Through continuous attempts, Yeh-Bin Chou found the best quality tea to participate in this year’s selection, and it was a great honor to win three awards — Gold Frog Award, Silver Frog Award, and Bronze Frog Award. Eating with zongzi at Dragon Boat Festival can relieve greasy food and balance the stomach.

Wen Lee, the Commissioner of Agriculture Department, said that this year’s National Organic Tea Selection was upgraded from New Taipei City to the whole country. Tea farmers in New Taipei City have won many awards; consumers now understand the advantage and good quality of organic tea in New Taipei City. Now is tea production season, and the Dragon Boat Festival is coming. It is recommended to have organic tea while eating zongzi.
