The result of the First Taiwan TAGs Organic Tea Award, 2020, was released on June 1 (TAGs, Taiwan-tea Assortment & Grading system). A total of 81 tea points participated in this competition. Hsin-Chung Cheng, from New Taipei City, won the first Taiwan TAGs Organic Tea Award Champion of strip-type Paochong tea. This year’s awarded teas will be sold on June 13th and 14th at Taipei Hope Plaza Farmer Market. Everyone is invited to fresh champion teas.
2020 is the first year of Taiwan Organic Tea. To expand the advertising effect, New Taipei City Government, Tea Research and Extension Station, Liu-Kung Agriculture Foundation, Tse-Xin Organic Agriculture Foundation, and New Taipei City Organic Agricultural Products Marketing Cooperative cooperated in holding the first Taiwan Organic Tea Selection; a small card of Taiwan Specialty Teas Flavor Wheel (written by the reviewers and judges of Taiwan TAGs Organic Tea Award) is placed in tea can with words describing the aroma and taste of organic tea. Emerald green treefrog is the indicator of organic tea gardens. Taiwan Organic Tea Selection awards are divided into “Tsui-Wa Award (also known as Jade Frog Award) and” golden, silver, and bronze frog trophies. Hsin-Chung Cheng of New Taipei City won the Tsui-Wa Award Champion of strip-type Paochong tea.
Hsin-Chung Cheng, a former chef, returned to his hometown to work as a farmer ten years ago, took over his parents’ organic tea garden, and continued the organic concept for three generations. He humbly said that the most challenging thing to overcome in organic cultivation is plant diseases and insect pests. With a good climate and proper management of tea gardens, there are fewer pest conditions this year, and the quality of tea is relatively good. Hsin-Chung Cheng kept trying to taste tea drinks and tried his best to choose the best tea through the chef’s spirit and choose the best tea to participate in the competition Hsin-Chung Cheng eventually won one Jade Frog award, three golden awards, and one silver frog award.
San-He Yu, the chairman of New Taipei City Organic Agricultural Products Marketing Cooperative, mentioned that the Taiwan-tea Assortment & Grading system had been conducted for three years. New Taipei City Organic Agricultural Products Marketing Cooperative was established in 2019 and hosted the first Taiwan TAGs Organic Tea Award this year. The production and processing of organic tea must meet organic standards. This year’s TAGs not only evaluate the quality of tea like regular tea competitions, such as appearance, liquor color, aroma, and taste but also combines the newly launched Taiwan Specialty Teas Flavor Wheel, which transfers the complex color and aroma of various tea into actual words. Wen Lee, the Commissioner of the Agriculture Department, said that this year’s National Organic Tea Selection was upgraded from New Taipei City to the whole country. The tea exhibition will be held at Taipei Hope Plaza Farmer Market today (June 13) and tomorrow (June 14).
