Once a Cram School Teacher, now a Youth Farmer who Grows Strawberries

Shuangxi District in New Taipei City is a simple and mysterious mountain city dominated by mining in the early days. Now it has become a nostalgic old street for tourists. A couple of young farmers who returned to their hometown Shuangxi are now planting strawberries in Shuangxi and opening a new chapter in their life story.

Yi-Han Wu, born in 1978, ran a cram school in Taoyuan for more than ten years. He led many students to study at famous universities, for example, National Taiwan University, Yangming University, National Taiwan Normal University, etc. Many students still bring souvenirs to visit him on his birthday every year after graduation. However, Yi-Han Wu began to think about the importance of the parent-child relationship. His relatives were coincidentally planning to build a strawberry garden in Shuangxi, their hometown. Yi-Han Wu and his wife thought, “let’s create more possibilities for the future and this land!” Their life of being a farmers started three years ago.

The Strawberry Garden, located in Shuangxi District, is a potent greenhouse covering an area of 300 square meters. More than 4000 strains of strawberries are planted, including “Aroma” and “Fragaria cv.” strawberries. Fragaria cv. Strawberry has a strong aroma, and the unique milk aroma when it is chewed in the mouth is far better than other strawberry varieties on the market. In less than one year, the Strawberry Garden has been operated. From plant planting, seedling raising, seedling selling, flowering, and fruit selling, the couple has experienced the flowering of plants in less than a month, and also experienced the scene of anthrax destroying most of the plants in less than a month, “Plants are not like junior high school students so that they can fight for their feelings,” Yi-Han Wu said with a sigh. Although the plants have suffered heavy losses due to pests and diseases, they still insist on giving children healthy food. Through continuous learning and consulting with the elders who planted strawberries at the farmers’ College, they gradually improved the pests and diseases. At present, strawberries have passed 380 pesticide tests through SGS tests. This persistence has caused Yi-Han Wu’s strawberries to fall short of demand. In addition to strawberries, some people sell strawberry seedlings and are interested in planting strawberries themselves. They can go to Yi-Han Wu’s FB (search for 吳小翰 ) and “Buy Directly with Farmers (https://www.buydirectlyfromfarmers.tw/)” during the strawberry season in December or through “line @人親土親.

Yi-Han Wu expressed his gratitude to the Agriculture Department of the New Taipei City Government for helping build a strawberry garden greenhouse and to the elders who have helped since they became farmers. To improve the planting yield and build more greenhouses in the future, their strawberry garden will also follow up with the planning of food and agriculture training so that the citizens and tourists can together make the strawberry garden a highlight by learning seedling raising and strawberry plucking, to tasting delicious hand-made strawberry jam and smoothie. Through the farming experience in the strawberry garden, the agricultural and tourism benefits of the Shuangxi district will be driven up, and more young people will be attracted to return to the country, bringing the power of sustainable management to Shuangxi.

Wen Lee, the Commissioner of the Agriculture Department, stated that New Taipei City Government encourages young people to join the agriculture team and will continue to discover excellent young farmers. Through relevant programs, New Taipei City Government will provide resources such as guidance, subsidies, courses, and channels to help young farmers to cultivate and thrive, build New Taipei City’s excellent agricultural product communities, and promote real estate sales to local tourism.
