Cherish Food and Protect our Earth without Worrying about the Pandemic

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day, with the theme being climate action. Earth Day Network (the organizer) encourages people to use tools, no matter how many resources they have, and to take practical steps to make permanent changes in our lives and the world, not just a one-day activity. In the face of this worldwide environmental protection movement, the Agriculture Department of the New Taipei City Government and Cherish Share Restaurant is not lagging; promoting the concept of Food Cherishing, and free food delivery to needed to prevent COVID-19.

GoodWill Foods are agricultural products eliminated because their specifications and appearance do not meet market standards. The elimination rate is as high as 40%. However, such wild products not only waste many resources but also waste the hard work of farmers. Therefore, the Agriculture Department has planned a “Cherish Share Restaurant” project to solve the severe food waste problem. Through the “Cherish&Share Platform,” the catering industry is encouraged to use organic and friendly “GoodWill Foods” from all places in Taiwan. The Agricultural Department appeals to the public to cherish resources and food and hopes to help sell agricultural products, and farmers’ hard work will not be in vain.

The Agricultural Department of New Taipei City Government stated that is year is the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day and the first year the Paris Climate Change Agreement has come into effect, and it is a crucial year on the issue of environmental protection. Earth Day Network encourages the public to take practical actions to support environmental protection issues. Taiwan also takes the “Climate Action” theme and focuses on four major topics: waste management, ecological conservation, climate change, and sustainable food. Being the organizer in Taiwan, Taiwan Environmental Information Association (TEIA) called on enterprises to join the “Declaration on Climate Action” to participate in global citizen action and invite people to participate in green life. The Agriculture Department of the New Taipei City Government and Cherish Share Restaurant also join the activity. Given the topic of “sustainable food,” the Agriculture Department continues to promote the concept of food conservation, encourage people to buy GoodWill Foods, and avoid waste of food materials. This year, besides promoting ideas through restaurant lectures and food-sharing activities, the Agriculture Department also plans to shoot short clips with the theme of “Agri-food education.” The public can participate in the process of farmers’ planting process and understand that no matter what “GoodWill Foods” looked like in appearance, they are still treasures to farmers. This is to arouse public attention to the issue of food conservation. Considering that the whole country is working hard to prevent COVID-19, many Cherish Share Restaurants in New Taipei City provide free delivery services so that people can easily enjoy food at home and work together to protect the Earth.

Wen Lee, the Commissioner of the Agriculture Department, said that New Taipei City Government expects the public to cherish food and care about environmental issues to reduce waste or resources.
